2005 National Lawyers Convention

by The Federalist Society

The 2005 National Lawyers Convention, organized by The Federalist Society, was held from November 10 to 12, 2005, at The Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. This annual event brought together legal professionals, scholars, and policymakers to discuss and debate significant legal and constitutional issues.

The convention's central theme was "Originalism," commemorating the twentieth anniversary of Attorney General Edwin Meese III's 1985 speech advocating for a "jurisprudence of original intention." Key sessions included panels on "Originalism and Unenumerated Constitutional Rights," "The Original Meaning of the Commerce, Spending and Necessary & Proper Clauses," and discussions on the judicial confirmations process.

Notable speakers featured at the event were Hon. Charles J. Cooper, Prof. Cass R. Sunstein, Prof. Steven G. Calabresi, Prof. Randy E. Barnett, and Hon. Seth P. Waxman. The convention also included the 5th Annual Barbara K. Olson Memorial Lecture and an address by Hon. Edwin Meese III.

The convention provided a platform for legal professionals interested in constitutional law and originalist interpretation to engage in in-depth discussions, network with peers, and gain insights from leading experts in the field.
