The 2013 E-Discovery Summit, titled "2nd Annual Educational Summit for State Court Judges: Unlocking E-Discovery," was a specialized event co-hosted by the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System (IAALS) and the National Judicial College. Held on September 19–20, 2013, in Denver, Colorado, the summit aimed to provide state court judges with comprehensive education on the discovery of electronically stored information (ESI), covering aspects from preservation to production and eventual use at trial.
The summit featured nationally renowned faculty who delivered both foundational training and in-depth discussions on complex e-discovery issues. Key sessions included "ESI Basics: Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How?" led by Jonathan M. Redgrave, and "Preservation: Challenges for Individuals, Companies, and State Courts," moderated by Thomas Y. Allman. Other notable topics addressed the evolving roles of people, processes, and technology in collection, review, and production of ESI, as well as practical aspects of using third parties like vendors and special masters.
The event also provided opportunities for interactive group discussions, such as crafting model orders, guidelines, and rules, and exploring discovery conferences and motions in state courts. A cocktail reception and dinner on the first day facilitated networking among attendees. Notable speakers included Hon. Paul W. Grimm, Maura R. Grossman, and John M. Barkett, who shared their expertise on various facets of e-discovery.
State court judges from over thirty states attended the summit to enhance their understanding of e-discovery challenges and to acquire tools for effectively managing ESI in their courtrooms. The event was particularly beneficial for judges seeking to navigate the complexities of electronic discovery and to promote fair and efficient litigation processes.
