2017 District Conference

He then served as the United States Attorney for the District of New Hampshire from 1989 to 1993 and as the New Hampshire State Attorney General from 1993 to 1997 before working in private practice from 1997 to 2002.

Judge Fogel is a senior federal judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of California and was appointed as Director of The Federal Judicial Center on October 3, 2011. Born in San Francisco, he received a B.A. with great distinction in religious studies from Stanford University in 1971 and a J.D. cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1974. He was in private practice in San Jose, California from 1974 to 1978 and was Founder and Directing Attorney of the Mental Health Advocacy Project for the Santa Clara County Bar Association Law Foundation. Judge Fogel served as a judge on the Santa Clara County Municipal Court from 1981 to 1986 and was appointed to the United States District Court for the Northern District of California in 1998.
