Federalist Society National Lawyers Convention 2018
The Federalist Society's 2018 National Lawyers Convention was held from November 15 to 17 at The Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. This annual event brings together legal professionals, scholars, and policymakers to discuss pressing legal and public policy issues. The 2018 convention focused on the theme "Good Government through Agency Accountability and Regulatory Transparency."
The convention featured a series of showcase sessions addressing topics such as the purpose of regulation, balancing insulation and accountability in agency decisions, the role of states in administrative law, and the extent of agency regulatory power. Additionally, practice group breakout sessions covered a wide range of subjects, including independent agencies, government-compelled speech, plea bargaining, climate change nuisance suits, artificial intelligence and big data innovation, and national security law in the context of international business.
Notable speakers at the event included Senator Mike Lee, who delivered the opening address, and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, who engaged with attendees during a dinner session. The convention also provided ample networking opportunities, allowing participants to connect with judges, law clerks, and prominent practitioners from across the country.
The event was particularly beneficial for law students and early-career attorneys seeking to expand their professional networks and gain insights into conservative and libertarian legal thought. Attendees had the opportunity to engage in intellectually stimulating discussions and build connections that could aid in securing clerkships and employment opportunities.
