The 2018 Northern California Clinical Conference, themed "Agents of Change: The Impact of Clinical Education," was held on February 10, 2018, at Stanford Law School. This annual regional conference brought together law school clinical and experiential learning educators to discuss the transformative role of clinical education in shaping future legal professionals and effecting meaningful legal work.
The conference featured a variety of sessions and workshops focusing on the influence of clinical education. Notable sessions included the Opening Plenary, which set the stage for discussions on the impact of clinical programs, and Workshop D, where participants explored innovative approaches to clinical teaching and practice. The Lunch & Keynote Speaker session provided insights into the evolving landscape of legal education and the role of clinics as agents of change.
Attendees had opportunities to engage with prominent figures in the field, such as Erwin Chemerinsky, Dean of Berkeley Law, who delivered the keynote address. Other distinguished speakers included Tirien Steinbach, Executive Director of the East Bay Community Law Center, and Jef Pearlman, Clinical Supervising Attorney at Stanford Law School. These sessions facilitated networking and collaboration among educators dedicated to advancing clinical legal education.

Dean and Richard E. Lang Professor of Law at Stanford Law School
Mary Elizabeth Magill was appointed the Richard E. Lang Professor of Law and Dean of Stanford Law School on September 1, 2012. She is an expert in administrative law and constitutional structure, and has served in various academic and governmental roles, including as a clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Magill has been recognized for her scholarly contributions and is a member of the American Law Institute.
Dorothy S. Landsberg

Dorothy Landsberg is an Associate Professor of Lawyering Skills at McGeorge School of Law and has served as Associate Dean for Experiential Learning and Academic Affairs. She has been instrumental in launching various legal clinics, including a Federal Defender Clinic and a Criminal Appellate Advocacy Clinic, and has co-taught in the Prisoner Civil Rights Mediation Clinic. Erwin Chemerinsky

Erwin Chemerinsky is the 13th Dean of Berkeley Law and a distinguished professor specializing in constitutional law, First Amendment law, federal courts, criminal procedure, and appellate litigation. He has authored ten books and over 200 law review articles, frequently argues appellate cases, including in the United States Supreme Court, and was named a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2016.
Gail Silverstein
Clinical Professor at UC Hastings College of the Law
Gail Silverstein co-directs and co-teaches the Individual Representation Clinic and Mediation Clinic at UC Hastings. She has litigated in areas including public benefits, employment, housing, and 'clean slate' law, and has mediated hundreds of cases. Silverstein is an active member of her community, serving as an honorary director of the Berkeley Law Foundation and has been involved with various organizations supporting public interest law.
Jef Pearlman
Clinical Supervising Attorney and Lecturer in Law at Stanford Law School
Jef Pearlman joined the Juelsgaard Intellectual Property and Innovation Clinic as a clinical supervising attorney and lecturer in law in 2014. He helps supervise and train law students to represent non-profits and innovators in intellectual property and innovation policy. Pearlman holds degrees in computer science from MIT and a J.D. from Stanford Law School, and has experience in both public interest advocacy and private practice.
Juliet M. Brodie

Juliet M. Brodie directs the Stanford Community Law Clinic and serves as Associate Dean of Clinical Education at Stanford Law School. She has dedicated her career to the legal rights and interests of low-income people and communities, and is a co-author of 'Poverty Law, Policy, & Practice.' Brodie has served as a member of the editorial board of the Clinical Law Review and as Chair of the Section on Poverty Law at the AALS.
Lynette M. Parker

Lynette Parker has been teaching and supervising law students handling immigration cases at the Katharine and George Alexander Community Law Center since 2000. She provides technical support to attorneys on political asylum, VAWA, U visa, and T visa cases, and has authored articles on representing traumatized clients. Parker has extensive experience representing asylum applicants and victims of human trafficking.

Seema N. Patel serves as the Clinical Director for the East Bay Community Law Center and is a Lecturer at UC Berkeley School of Law. Suzanne Luban co-teaches Stanford Law School’s Criminal Defense Clinic, bringing nearly three decades of experience as a criminal defense practitioner. Tirien Steinbach

Tirien Steinbach is the executive director of the East Bay Community Law Center (EBCLC), the community-based clinic for Berkeley Law School. She is a lecturer-in-residence and teaches a companion course on applied legal ethics and community lawyering. Steinbach joined EBCLC in 2001, where she incubated the Clean Slate Clinic, a community reentry program.
