The 2018 Northern California Clinical Conference, themed "Agents of Change: The Impact of Clinical Education," was held on February 10, 2018, at Stanford Law School. This annual regional conference brought together law school clinical and experiential learning educators to discuss the transformative role of clinical education in shaping future legal professionals and effecting meaningful legal work.
The conference featured a variety of sessions and workshops focusing on the influence of clinical education. Notable sessions included the Opening Plenary, which set the stage for discussions on the impact of clinical programs, and Workshop D, where participants explored innovative approaches to clinical teaching and practice. The Lunch & Keynote Speaker session provided insights into the evolving landscape of legal education and the role of clinics as agents of change.
Attendees had opportunities to engage with prominent figures in the field, such as Erwin Chemerinsky, Dean of Berkeley Law, who delivered the keynote address. She has served as Associate Dean for Experiential Learning and Director of Legal Clinics, launching several innovative clinics and receiving the 2013 Ninth Circuit ADR Education Award for mediation clinics.
Erwin Chemerinsky
Dean and Jesse H. Choper Distinguished Professor of Law at Berkeley Law
Erwin Chemerinsky became the 13th Dean of Berkeley Law on July 1, 2017, when he joined the faculty as the Jesse H. Choper Distinguished Professor of Law. He is the author of ten books and more than 200 law review articles, and frequently argues appellate cases, including in the United States Supreme Court.
Jef Pearlman
Clinical Supervising Attorney and Lecturer in Law at Stanford Law School
Jef Pearlman joined the Juelsgaard Intellectual Property and Innovation Clinic as a clinical supervising attorney and lecturer in law in 2014. He helps supervise and train law students to represent non-profits and innovators at the cutting edge of intellectual property and innovation policy in courts, administrative agencies, and the public sphere.

Prior to this role, she served as the Deputy Director of San Francisco’s Office of Labor Standards Enforcement, focusing on enforcing labor and workers’ rights laws.

Steve Castleman is a Visiting Associate Professor at Golden Gate University School of Law and a Staff Attorney in its Environmental Law and Justice Clinic. He has prosecuted environmental crimes, obtaining both the first misdemeanor and the first felony jury convictions under California’s hazardous waste laws.
Suzanne A. Luban
Clinical Supervising Attorney and Lecturer in Law at Stanford Law School
Suzanne Luban co-teaches Stanford Law School’s Criminal Defense Clinic as the Clinical Supervising Attorney and Lecturer in Law. She brings nearly three decades of experience as a criminal defense practitioner, having litigated over 80 appeals in the Ninth Circuit, resulting in numerous published opinions.
Tirien Steinbach
Executive Director at East Bay Community Law Center
Tirien Steinbach is the executive director of the East Bay Community Law Center (EBCLC), the community-based clinic for Berkeley Law School (Boalt Hall). She is a lecturer-in-residence and teaches a companion course on applied legal ethics and community lawyering. Steinbach joined EBCLC in 2001, where she incubated the Clean Slate Clinic, a community reentry program.
Zeba Huq
Clinical Supervising Attorney and Lecturer in Law at Stanford Law School
Zeba Huq joined the Religious Liberty Clinic as a clinical supervising attorney and lecturer in law in 2015. She helps supervise and train law students as they learn the practice of law through the litigation of religious liberty claims, and has previously taught a course on religious liberty at New York University Abu Dhabi.
