The 2019 Innovations in Technology Conference, organized by the Legal Services Corporation (LSC), took place from January 8 to 11, 2019, in New Orleans, Louisiana. This annual event convened over 500 professionals, including technologists, legal aid advocates, court personnel, and academics, to explore innovative ways of using technology to enhance access to justice and provide high-quality legal representation for low-income individuals.
Key topics covered during the conference included the integration of artificial intelligence in legal services, data utilization throughout the lifecycle of a legal problem, and the implementation of limited scope services as a core component of achieving 100% access to justice. Sessions such as "Ensuring Justice in a World of Artificial Intelligence and High-Tech Tools," "Data and the Life of a Legal Problem," and "Limited Scope Services: A Core Part of 100% Access" provided in-depth discussions on these subjects.
The conference featured a Legal Aid Hackathon, where participants collaborated to develop innovative solutions for improving access to justice. Additionally, Rapid Fire Tech Talks offered quick insights into emerging technologies, and various workshops provided hands-on learning experiences. Notable speakers included LSC President Jim Sandman, who delivered the opening remarks, and other leaders in the legal and technology sectors who shared their expertise throughout the event.
This conference was particularly beneficial for legal aid professionals, technologists, court personnel, and academics interested in leveraging technology to bridge the justice gap. Attendees had the opportunity to network with peers, gain insights into successful technology projects, and collaborate on new initiatives aimed at enhancing legal services for underserved communities.
