NIU College of Law Commencement 2019

The Northern Illinois University (NIU) College of Law held its 2019 Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 25, 2019, at the Holmes Student Center's Sandburg Auditorium in DeKalb, Illinois. This annual event celebrates the achievements of the graduating class and marks their transition into the legal profession.

The ceremony featured a keynote address by Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, who shared insights from his extensive career in both public and private law practice. He encouraged graduates to pursue their paths with purpose and to remain open to the evolving nature of their careers. Additionally, Professors of the Year Robert Jones and David Rosenfeld, along with Class Speaker Sonia Oswald, provided reflections and words of encouragement to the graduates.

The event concluded with the presentation of graduate awards, the hooding ceremony, and the conferring of degrees by NIU President Lisa Freeman. A reception followed, offering graduates, faculty, and guests an opportunity to celebrate and network.

David Rosenfeld

Professor of Law at Northern Illinois University College of Law

David Rosenfeld is a Professor of Law at NIU College of Law and was recognized as one of the Professors of the Year in 2019.

Kwame Raoul

Attorney General of Illinois at State of Illinois

Kwame Raoul was sworn in as the 42nd Attorney General of Illinois in January 2019. He began his legal career as a prosecutor in the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office and has served as a Senior Staff Attorney for the City Colleges of Chicago, as well as a partner at two national law firms. Prior to becoming Attorney General, he served 14 years as the Illinois state senator representing the 13th Legislative District.

Robert Jones

Professor of Law at Northern Illinois University College of Law

Robert Jones is a Professor of Law at NIU College of Law and was recognized as one of the Professors of the Year in 2019.

Sonia Oswald

Class Speaker at Northern Illinois University College of Law

Sonia Oswald served as the Class Speaker for the NIU College of Law Class of 2019, sharing insights and memories from their law school journey during the commencement ceremony.
