by The Sedona Conference

The Sedona Conference Working Group 11 (WG11) 2019 Midyear Meeting was a two-day event held on September 18-19, 2019, at the Four Seasons Hotel in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Organized by The Sedona Conference, a nonpartisan, nonprofit research and educational institute, this meeting focused on advancing the study of law and policy in data security and privacy liability.

Key topics addressed during the meeting included proactive privacy and security governance, compliance with global data privacy and security regulations, defining and measuring statutory damages under U.S. privacy laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), promoting transparency in artificial intelligence (AI) models and algorithms, and developing model data breach notification principles. Sessions also featured a data security and privacy case law update, a government agency roundtable, and discussions on proposals for data transfers out of Canada.

The event provided attendees with opportunities to engage with leading experts in the field, including dialogue leaders from various sectors such as law firms, government agencies, and private companies. Notable speakers included Julian Ackert from iDiscovery Solutions, Mark T. Bailey from the Office of the Colorado Attorney General, and Jason R. Baron from Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP. A welcome reception was held on the evening of September 17, offering additional networking opportunities.

This meeting was particularly beneficial for legal professionals, data privacy and security experts, and policymakers seeking to stay informed about the latest developments and best practices in data security and privacy law. Participants had the chance to contribute to the development of consensus commentaries and engage in in-depth discussions on pressing issues in the field.
