Westchester Women's Bar Association Panel: Perspectives on the First Year of Implementation of Raise the Age

by Westchester Women's Bar Association

The Westchester Women's Bar Association (WWBA), in collaboration with the Pace Women's Justice Center and the Pace Law Criminal Justice Institute, hosted a panel discussion titled "Perspectives on the First Year of Implementation of Raise the Age." This event took place on October 3, 2019, at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University in White Plains, New York.

The panel focused on the first year of implementing New York State's "Raise the Age" legislation, which increased the age of criminal responsibility. Discussions centered on the law's impact on the juvenile justice system, challenges faced during its implementation, and insights gained over the year.

The event featured a distinguished panel, including Amy Puerto, Principal Law Clerk to the Honorable Helen Blackwood, A.J.S.C., who served as both moderator and panelist. Other panelists were Yvonne Borkowski, Esq., Youth Part Region Chief at The Legal Aid Society of Westchester County; Eve Bunting Smith, Esq.; Peter Jackson, Assistant County Attorney at the Westchester County Attorney’s Office, Family Court Bureau; and Ted Livingston, Assistant District Attorney at the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office, Coordinator of Violent Felonies, and Head of Youth Court.

This program was particularly beneficial for legal professionals involved in juvenile justice, providing Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits and offering valuable insights into the practical implications of the "Raise the Age" legislation.
