The "Judicial Roundtable: Exploring the Judicial Perspective for 2020 and Beyond" was a session held on May 1, 2020, as part of The Sedona Conference's Working Group 1 Annual Meeting. The Sedona Conference is a nonpartisan, nonprofit 501(c)(3) research and educational institute dedicated to the advanced study of law and policy in areas such as antitrust law, complex litigation, intellectual property rights, and data security and privacy law. The mission of The Sedona Conference is to move the law forward in a reasoned and just way through the creation and publication of nonpartisan consensus commentaries and through advanced legal education for the bench and bar.
This session featured a panel of esteemed judges, including Hon. Allison Goddard, Hon. Kristen L. Mix, Hon. Katharine H. Parker, Hon. Andrew J. Peck (ret.), and Hon. Leda Dunn Wettre. Moderated by Lauren Schwartzreich of Littler Mendelson P.C., the discussion focused on the evolving role of technology in the judicial system, particularly in the context of remote work and virtual litigation. The panelists shared their insights on how technology has both challenged and supported the courts during unprecedented times, reflecting on the rapid shift to virtual proceedings and its implications for the future of legal practice.
The session provided a platform for judges to discuss the impact of emerging eDiscovery case law, offering guidance on preventing eDiscovery pitfalls and strategies to address them. Attendees had the opportunity to engage directly with the panelists, gaining valuable perspectives on the intersection of technology and the judiciary. The event was part of a broader agenda that included sessions on social, technological, and ethical challenges of electronic evidence in criminal cases, discovery from third-party apps, and reinventing the privilege log.
This event was particularly beneficial for legal professionals seeking to understand the judicial perspective on the integration of technology in legal proceedings.
