Stefan A. Riesenfeld Symposium
The Stefan A. Riesenfeld Symposium is an annual event organized by the Berkeley Journal of International Law, the William G. and Ariadna Miller Institute for Global Challenges and the Law, and the Berkeley Center for Law and Business. This symposium honors the legacy of Professor Stefan A. Riesenfeld, a distinguished Berkeley Law professor renowned for his contributions to international law, comparative law, property law, creditors’ remedies and bankruptcy, administrative law, and legal history. The event serves as a platform for legal experts, policymakers, and industry leaders to engage in discussions on pressing global legal issues.
In 2024, the symposium focused on the theme "Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Factors and International Law," convening experts to explore the intricate relationship between ESG considerations and international legal frameworks. The keynote address was delivered by Professor Paolo Taticchi from University College London School of Management, who was also honored with the Riesenfeld Award for his significant contributions to sustainable business practices. The event was sponsored by Berkeley Law’s Miller Institute for Global Challenges and the Law and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.
The symposium featured a series of panel discussions and presentations by leading scholars and practitioners in the field of international law and ESG. Attendees had the opportunity to engage in in-depth conversations, exchange ideas, and gain insights into the evolving landscape of international legal responses to ESG challenges. The event also provided networking opportunities, allowing participants to connect with peers and experts from various sectors.
The Stefan A. Riesenfeld Symposium is particularly beneficial for legal professionals, scholars, policymakers, and students interested in international law, ESG issues, and global legal challenges. Attending the symposium offers a unique opportunity to stay informed about current developments, engage with thought leaders, and contribute to meaningful discussions on the future of international law in the context of ESG considerations.
