National eDiscovery Leadership Institute (NeLI) 2021
The National eDiscovery Leadership Institute (NeLI) is an annual conference dedicated to advancing the field of electronic discovery. Organized by the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Law, NeLI aims to provide high-quality educational opportunities to judges and legal professionals, focusing on electronically stored information (ESI) and fostering cooperation between the bench and the bar.
The 2021 NeLI conference featured a comprehensive agenda covering key topics such as technology-assisted review (TAR), information governance, and data privacy. Sessions included discussions on best practices for managing large volumes of ESI, the latest developments in eDiscovery case law, and strategies for effective collaboration between legal teams and technology experts.
Attendees had the opportunity to engage with a distinguished lineup of speakers, including Hon. Allison H. Goddard, U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Southern District of California; Hon. Teresa J. Hon. Allison H. Goddard
U.S. Magistrate Judge at U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California
Judge Goddard was sworn in as a U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Southern District of California in August 2019. She graduated from Boston College in 1993 and received her J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law in 2000. Judge Goddard has extensive experience in litigation, including representing corporate defendants and plaintiffs in complex and intellectual property cases. She is a member of the Advisory Board of the San Diego Chapter of the Federal Bar Association and the Louis M. Welsh Inn of Court.

Appointed in 2019, Judge Mitchell serves as a U.S. Magistrate Judge in the District of Kansas. Before joining the bench, she was a partner at Shook Hardy & Bacon, LLP, focusing on intellectual property litigation. Judge Mitchell has represented Fortune 100 clients in patent, trademark, and copyright cases nationwide and has experience with appellate litigation before the Federal Circuit.

U.S. Magistrate Judge at U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas
Appointed on January 16, 2014, Judge James serves as a U.S. Magistrate Judge for the District of Kansas in Kansas City. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas in 1981 and her J.D. from the University of Kansas in 1984. Prior to her appointment, Judge James specialized in energy, oil and gas, condemnation, and complex litigation. She has been actively involved in various legal organizations, including the Kansas Bar Association’s Continuing Legal Education Commission and the Federal Bar Association.

Judge Rodriguez is a former Texas Supreme Court Justice and currently serves as a U.S. District Judge for the Western District of Texas.
