The National eDiscovery Leadership Institute (NeLI) is an annual conference dedicated to advancing the field of electronic discovery. Organized by the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Law, NeLI aims to provide high-quality educational opportunities to judges and legal professionals, focusing on electronically stored information (ESI) and fostering cooperation between the bench and the bar.

The 2021 NeLI conference featured a comprehensive agenda covering key topics such as technology-assisted review (TAR), information governance, and data privacy. Sessions included discussions on best practices for managing large volumes of ESI, the latest developments in eDiscovery case law, and strategies for effective collaboration between legal teams and technology experts.

Attendees had the opportunity to engage with a distinguished lineup of speakers, including Hon. Allison H. Goddard, U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Southern District of California; Hon. Teresa J. James, U.S. Magistrate Judge for the District of Kansas; and Maura R. Grossman, J.D., Ph.D., a renowned expert in eDiscovery and Director of Women in Computer Science at the University of Waterloo. The conference also provided networking opportunities and access to an expo hall showcasing the latest eDiscovery technologies and services.

Emily Collins

Emily Collins is a lawyer with over 14 years of experience solving eDiscovery and information governance problems. Having worked as outside counsel, in-house counsel, and a consultant in the service provider space, she has a well-rounded view of eDiscovery, enabling her to understand the perspectives of all stakeholders. Emily is passionate about solving challenges in the rapidly evolving field and collaborates with other practitioners to find unique solutions.

Greg MacFarlane

Senior Director of Managed Review Sales at DISCO

Greg MacFarlane is the Senior Director of Managed Review Sales at legal technology leader DISCO. He focuses on eDiscovery workflow to help clients manage the costs and risks of managing big data in litigation. Greg received his JD from Temple University’s Beasley School of Law and is completing his Masters of Engineering at George Washington University’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

Hon. Allison H. Goddard

U.S. Magistrate Judge at U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California

Judge Goddard was sworn in as a U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Southern District of California in August 2019. She graduated from Boston College in 1993 and received her J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law in 2000. Judge Goddard has extensive experience in litigation, including representing corporate defendants and plaintiffs in complex and intellectual property cases. She is a member of the Advisory Board of the San Diego Chapter of the Federal Bar Association and the Louis M. Welsh Inn of Court.

Hon. Andrew J. Peck (Ret.)

Senior Counsel at DLA Piper LLP

Judge Peck served for 23 years as a U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Southern District of New York, including a term as Chief Magistrate Judge. Before his judicial appointment, he practiced commercial and entertainment litigation. At DLA Piper, Judge Peck advises on innovative solutions to information management challenges and is recognized internationally for his contributions to eDiscovery.

Hon. Angel D. Mitchell

U.S. Magistrate Judge at U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas

Appointed in 2019, Judge Mitchell serves as a U.S. Magistrate Judge in the District of Kansas. Before joining the bench, she was a partner at Shook Hardy & Bacon, LLP, focusing on intellectual property litigation. Judge Mitchell has represented Fortune 100 clients in patent, trademark, and copyright cases nationwide and has experience with appellate litigation before the Federal Circuit.

Hon. Teresa J. James

U.S. Magistrate Judge at U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas

Appointed on January 16, 2014, Judge James serves as a U.S. Magistrate Judge for the District of Kansas in Kansas City. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas in 1981 and her J.D. from the University of Kansas in 1984. Prior to her appointment, Judge James specialized in energy, oil and gas, condemnation, and complex litigation. She has been actively involved in various legal organizations, including the Kansas Bar Association’s Continuing Legal Education Commission and the Federal Bar Association.

Hon. Xavier Rodriguez

U.S. District Judge at U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas

Judge Rodriguez is a former Texas Supreme Court Justice and currently serves as a U.S. District Judge for the Western District of Texas. He holds degrees from Harvard University, the University of Texas LBJ School of Public Affairs, and the University of Texas Law School. Prior to his judicial service, he was a partner at Fulbright & Jaworski. Judge Rodriguez is a recognized authority on eDiscovery, serving on The Sedona Conference Judicial Advisory Board and as an adjunct professor at St. Mary’s University School of Law.

Jeremy Wikler

Of Counsel at Shook, Hardy & Bacon LLP

Jeremy Wikler is of counsel in the Data and Discovery Strategies Practice Group at Shook, Hardy & Bacon LLP. With over a decade of experience, he manages all aspects of discovery and litigates a wide variety of discovery disputes in state and federal courts across the country. Jeremy regularly advises clients on best practices for discovery and information governance issues.

John J. Pappas Jr.

Midwest Director at OpenText

John J. Pappas Jr. is a lawyer and experienced e-discovery consultant, serving as Midwest Director with OpenText. Before joining OpenText, he was a litigator and trial attorney specializing in commercial litigation, products liability, and all aspects of e-discovery.
