EDPS Conference 2022: The Future of Data Protection
The EDPS Conference 2022, titled "The Future of Data Protection: Effective Enforcement in the Digital World," was organized by the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) on June 16 and 17, 2022, in Brussels, Belgium. The event aimed to foster discussions on enhancing data protection enforcement in the digital era.
The conference featured over 100 distinguished speakers and included 16 breakout sessions and workshops. Key topics addressed included the need for a pan-European data protection enforcement model, the effectiveness of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and strategies for building a culture of compliance across the European Union.
Notable speakers included Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, who delivered a keynote speech on the first day, and Věra Jourová, European Commission Vice-President, who spoke on the second day. The event also featured a fireside chat with Shoshana Zuboff, a prominent scholar in the field of data protection.
The conference was designed for policymakers, data protection authorities, legal professionals, and stakeholders interested in the future of data protection and its enforcement. It provided a platform for sharing best practices and discussing challenges in the digital regulatory sphere.

Alexandre de Streel
Professor of European Law at University of Namur - CERRE
Alexandre de Streel is academic director of the Brussels think-tank Centre on Regulation in Europe (CERRE), professor of European law at the University of Namur and visiting professor at the College of Europe (Bruges) and SciencesPo Paris. He is also Hauser Global Fellow at New York University Law School, Chair of the expert group on the online platform economy advising the European Commission and part-time judge at the Belgian Competition Authority. His main areas of research are regulation and competition policy in the digital economy as well as the legal issues raised by the developments of artificial intelligence. Previously, Alexandre worked for the Belgian Deputy Prime Minister, the Belgian Permanent Representation to the European Union and the European Commission. He holds a Ph.D. in Law from the European University Institute and a Master Degree in Economics from the University of Louvain.

Anu Bradford is Henry L. Moses Professor of Law and International Organizations at Columbia Law School, a Director for Columbia’s European Legal Studies Center, and a Senior Scholar at Jerome A. Chazen Institute for Global Business at Columbia Business School. Bradford is also a nonresident scholar in the Europe Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Her research focuses on international trade law, European Union law, digital regulation, and comparative and international antitrust law.

Birgit Sippel has been a Member of the European Parliament since 2009. In 2022, she has been re-elected as Coordinator of the S&D Group in the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) for the third time in a row. In addition, she is a Substitute Member in the Committee of Inquiry to investigate Pegasus and equivalent surveillance spyware (PEGA). Furthermore, she held the position as Vice Chair of the Special Committee on Artificial Intelligence in a Digital Age (AIDA) since 2020. She currently serves as the European Parliament Rapporteur for the Regulations on e-Privacy, for access to e-Evidence and Screening of third country nationals at the external borders as part of the New Pact on Migration.

Leonardo Cervera Navas

Leonardo Cervera Navas is the Director of the Office of the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS), the Data Protection Authority of the European Union. Law graduate of the University of Málaga and master’s degree in European Law from the University of Granada (Spain). He was a fellow at Duke University in North Carolina (US) as part of the EU Fellowship Programme of the European Commission. He also holds a post-graduate diploma in HR management by Kingston University (UK). He is Member of the Malaga Academy of Sciences (correspondent in Brussels). Leonardo joined the European Commission in 1999 and since then he has been working in the Data Protection field in the EU institutions. In 2010, he joined the EDPS, as Head of the Human Resources, Budget and Administration Unit and he was appointed Director in 2018. As Head of the Secretariat, he is a member of the Management Board of the EDPS, responsible for advising on data protection law and policy, and he is in charge of the coordination and implementation of the strategies and policies of the institution.

Orla Lynskey

Orla Lynskey is an Associate Professor at the LSE Law School and a Visiting Professor at the College of Europe, Bruges. She is an Editor of International Data Privacy Law and on the Editorial Committee of the Modern Law Review. Orla is also an Associate at the Centre for Intellectual Property and Information Law at the University of Cambridge, where she is currently a Visiting Researcher, and at the VUB's Brussels Privacy Hub. During her sabbatical leave, Orla is working on several co-authored projects including a paper on synthetic data; a textbook on EU Data Protection Law and Policy and a paper on the constitutional challenges posed by the one-stop-shop mechanism.

Przemysław Pałka is an Assistant Professor at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland, where serves as the PI for the Project "Private Law of Data: Concepts, Principles, Practices and Politics" funded by the Norway Grants. He is also Affiliated Fellow at the Information Society Project at Yale. His research interests encompass the intersections of law, technology, and social justice. In particular, Pałka’s interested in private law, consumer law, data law, law’s automation, and legal aspects of AI, virtual objects and interoperability. Before joining the Jagiellonian University in January 2021, Pałka was Yale’s Fellow in Private Law (2018-2020), and a Researcher at the European University Institute in Florence (2016-2018). He holds a PhD (’17) and an LLM (’14) from the EUI, and an MA (’13) from the University of Warsaw, Poland.
