The International Institute of Legal Project Management (IILPM) hosted its inaugural conference on May 12 and 13, 2022, bringing together legal professionals from around the globe to discuss advancements in legal project management (LPM). The virtual event was free to attend and attracted participants from various jurisdictions, reflecting the growing global interest in LPM practices.
The conference featured a diverse range of topics, including best practices for implementing LPM in both private practice law firms and in-house legal teams. Discussions emphasized the importance of understanding client demands, starting LPM initiatives with small, manageable steps, securing support from senior management, and recognizing that LPM extends beyond cost containment to enhance overall client satisfaction. Additionally, the role of technology as an enabler in LPM was explored, with a focus on establishing the right people, skills, and processes before deploying technological solutions.
Notable sessions included a panel on building successful LPM practices for in-house teams, where Luis Angel Prendes, Global Director of Legal Affairs and Digital Transformation at Telefonica (Spain), likened the development and application of LPM to 'falling in love,' highlighting the passion and persistence required for successful implementation. The conference also addressed challenges in sustaining LPM practices, even among firms with high maturity levels, and discussed the emergence of independent legal project managers as a growing trend in the industry.
The event provided valuable networking opportunities through breakout rooms covering LPM developments across different regions, including Latin America, USA & Canada, Africa & Middle East, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. These sessions allowed participants to share insights and experiences, fostering a collaborative environment for advancing LPM practices worldwide. The conference concluded with the announcement of upcoming awards aimed at recognizing innovation and success in LPM, with nominations opening in July and winners to be announced at an online event in November 2022.
