The International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Law (ICAIL) is the premier international conference dedicated to research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and law. Organized biennially since 1987 under the auspices of the International Association for Artificial Intelligence and Law (IAAIL), ICAIL 2023 was held from June 19 to 23 at the University of Minho's Law School in Braga, Portugal. The conference proceedings are published by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).

ICAIL 2023 covered a wide array of topics, including argument mining on legal texts, computational methods for negotiation and contract formation, computer-assisted dispute resolution, and decision support systems in the legal domain. Special tracks focused on areas such as AI and empirical legal studies, ensuring a comprehensive exploration of current challenges and advancements in the field.

The conference featured workshops and tutorials on June 19 and 23, providing attendees with opportunities to delve deeper into specific subjects. Notable workshops included sessions on online dispute resolution, computable contracts, and artificial intelligence for access to justice. These sessions facilitated hands-on learning and fostered collaboration among participants.

Chief Scientific Officer and Co-founder at Redgrave Data

David D. Lewis is Chief Scientific Officer and co-founder of Redgrave Data, a boutique legal technology services firm. He has worked for over 35 years at the intersections of information retrieval, machine learning, natural language processing, and statistics, in a wide variety of research, industry, and consulting roles. He was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2006 for foundational work in text analytics.
