SubTech 2023

SubTech is a biennial conference dedicated to exploring substantive legal technology, bringing together scholars, practitioners, and technologists interested in the intersection of technology and legal practice and education. Since its inception in 1990, the conference has been hosted in various international venues, including Salzburg, Chicago, Paris, Montreal, and others. The 2023 edition was organized by the Northwestern Law and Technology Initiative.

The conference covers a range of topics pertinent to legal technology, such as artificial intelligence, computer-aided instruction, practice systems, online legal research, and web-based applications. It focuses on technologies that involve significant legal content and are used or studied in legal education and practice.

SubTech 2023 featured keynote addresses, panel discussions, and hands-on workshops. Notable sessions included evaluations of generative AI tools, discussions on large language models, and a mini hackathon on generative AI for law. The event also provided ample networking opportunities, including receptions and collaborative research sessions.

The conference is ideal for legal educators, practitioners, technologists, and scholars interested in the application of technology in legal education and practice.
