The 28th Annual Competition Conference, organized by the International Bar Association (IBA), took place on 6–7 September 2024 at the St Regis Florence in Florence, Italy. This premier event convened global experts in competition law to discuss the latest developments and challenges in antitrust enforcement. The conference was co-chaired by Janet Hui of JunHe LLP in Beijing and Samantha Mobley of Baker & McKenzie in London, both esteemed leaders in the field.
The conference featured a diverse range of sessions covering critical topics such as the intersection of market dynamics and regulatory intervention in the digital age, the European Commission's efforts to strengthen enforcement against 'killer acquisitions', and the need to modernize assessment approaches in competition law. Notable sessions included the 'Enforcers Roundtable', which brought together global competition enforcers to discuss their priorities and challenges, and a keynote address by Margrethe Vestager, then-Executive Vice President of the European Commission for A Europe Fit for the Digital Age and Commissioner for Competition.
Attendees had the opportunity to engage with leading figures in competition law, including Ravneet Kaur, Chairperson of the Competition Commission of India, and Alejandra Palacios, former Chair of Mexico’s antitrust agency, the Federal Economic Competition Commission (COFECE). The conference also addressed pressing issues such as the crisis of food security and the role of competition policy, highlighting the fading significance of traditional debates about the goals of antitrust in the face of hunger. These discussions provided valuable insights into the evolving role of competition law in addressing global challenges.
