The Law Society Pro Bono Week Event 2024 is an initiative organized by the Law Society of Ireland to celebrate and promote pro bono legal work within the country. Scheduled for Thursday, 13 June 2024, at 4:30 pm, the event will be held at Blackhall Place in Dublin. It aims to bring together legal professionals, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other stakeholders to discuss and enhance access to justice through voluntary legal services.
The event will feature a panel discussion chaired by Mr. Justice Liam Kennedy of the High Court. Confirmed speakers include Eilis Barry, Chief Executive of FLAC; Michelle Drury from Irish Rule of Law International (IRLI); John Lunney of the Law Society's Street Law Programme; and Gemma McLoughlin Burke from the Voluntary Assistance Programme. Topics will cover the current state of pro bono work in Ireland, pathways for lawyers to engage in such work, and the impact of these services on social justice.
A highlight of the event is the first in-person PILA NGO Pitch, where three social justice organizations will present their causes to attending legal practitioners, seeking pro bono legal assistance. This segment provides a unique opportunity for NGOs to connect directly with lawyers willing to offer their expertise. Additionally, the event will facilitate networking opportunities between NGO representatives and the legal community, fostering collaborations that aim to enhance access to justice in Ireland.
Legal professionals, law students, NGO representatives, and others interested in pro bono work are encouraged to attend. The event offers a platform to learn about the pro bono landscape in Ireland, discover opportunities for involvement, and contribute to the broader goal of promoting access to justice for those in need.
