The National Association of Women Judges (NAWJ) hosted its 2024 Annual Conference from October 17 to 19 in San Diego, California. This event brought together judges, legal professionals, and scholars to discuss pressing issues in the judiciary and celebrate the achievements of women in the legal field.

The conference featured a diverse agenda, including plenary sessions and breakout discussions on topics such as artificial intelligence in the legal system, judicial security, human trafficking, and the erosion of judicial independence. Notable sessions included "Artificial Intelligence," which explored technological advancements and ethical dilemmas arising from AI, and "The Erosion of the Judicial Independence of our Judiciary and the Politicization of Judicial Elections," addressing challenges to judicial impartiality.

Attendees had opportunities to engage in networking events, such as the Welcome Reception and the Friends Wine Tasting Reception. The conference also honored distinguished individuals with awards like the Joan Dempsey Klein Honoree of the Year Award and the Florence K. Murray Award, recognizing contributions to the advancement of women in the judiciary.

The conference was designed for judges, legal practitioners, academics, and law students interested in the intersection of law and technology, judicial ethics, and the promotion of diversity within the legal profession. Participants gained insights into current challenges and developments in the judiciary, as well as opportunities for professional growth and networking.

Nicole N. Morris

Director of Innovation & Legal Tech; TI:GER® Program Professor of Practice at Emory University School of Law

Nicole Morris is a Professor of Practice at Emory University School of Law and the inaugural Director of the Innovation & Legal Tech Initiative as well as the TI:GER® Program Director. TI:GER® (Technological Innovation: Generating Economic Results) is an innovative technology commercialization program wherein law students work with technology innovators to transform highly promising research into economically viable products. In 2021, the Emory TI:GER program partnered with the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) to assist with the technology commercialization efforts within the Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratories. Prior to joining Emory Law, Professor Morris practiced patent law for over twenty years in large and mid-sized law firms and has represented clients in patent and trademark matters. She was Managing Patent Counsel for The Coca-Cola Company, responsible for the development and implementation of the company’s global patent strategy. Before attending law school, she worked as an engineer for six years with 3M and Eli Lilly and has over twenty-five years of experience working with consumer products and technology commercialization.

Sonia Gipson Rankin

Professor at University of New Mexico School of Law

Sonia Gipson Rankin is a Professor at the University of New Mexico School of Law, blending her computer science background with legal expertise. She teaches courses such as Torts, Family Law, and Technology and Law. Her scholarship in artificial intelligence has been featured in prestigious journals, including the Washington and Lee Law Review, NYU Law Review Online, Nature Reviews Electrical Engineering, and Wisconsin Law Review. Professor Gipson Rankin is an American Bar Foundation Fellow, a key member of the New Mexico Supreme Court Commission on Equity and Justice, and a past president of the New Mexico Black Lawyers Association. She co-founded the UNM Algorithmic Justice Project and actively participates in the UNM-Santa Fe Institute Interdisciplinary Working Group on Algorithmic Justice. She regularly speaks on AI, technology, algorithmic justice, constitutional law, and inclusive leadership, having been featured in media outlets such as BBC World News, Reuters, NPR, and Yahoo! Finance.
