Justice Matters 2025

by Hague Institute for Innovation of Law (HiiL)

Justice Matters 2025 is a full-day conference dedicated to scaling people-centred justice, including practical examples of what’s working, meaningful dialogues on the economic, social, and political impact of access to justice, and an exploration of efforts to mobilise the investment and leadership needed to scale justice solutions. The event is organized by the Hague Institute for Innovation of Law (HiiL) and will be hosted at the historic Peace Palace in The Hague, with a global livestream available.

The programme includes sessions such as "The Justice Gap: Defining the Challenge," an opening plenary grounded in data and lived experience, exploring how justice systems are falling short and how justice gaps affect stability, well-being, and economic growth; "Why Justice Matters," a cross-sector conversation showing how justice underpins well-being, peace, trust, and inclusive growth with insights from civil society, business, and security sectors; "We Know What Works," a roadmap for implementing and scaling people-centred justice, grounded in global frameworks and national experiences, with a focus on enabling environments and identifying the critical enablers, institutional and regulatory frameworks, and financial models necessary to expand successful justice interventions; "Justice in Action," TED-style talks highlighting scalable, people-centred justice models that are strengthening governance, communities, and systems worldwide; and "Scaling for Impact," a high-level discussion on overcoming barriers to scaling justice solutions from political will and institutional change to sustainable financing and long-term investment.

Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from leaders who are shaping the future of justice, including Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, former Vice President of Nigeria; Alpha Sesay, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Sierra Leone; Allyson Maynard Gibson, former Attorney-General of The Bahamas; Martha Koome, Chief Justice of Kenya (video address); Kees Matthijssen, Lieutenant General (ret.), Royal Dutch Army; Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, Founding Partner, Future Africa / Flutterwave; Tatyana Teplova, Director, Global Partnership, Inclusion and Justice Division at the OECD; Michael Stych, Co-Founder & CEO, Contend Legal; Michael Kwizera, Director of Strategy & Partnerships, BarefootLaw; Holly Burduja, Senior Public Sector Specialist, World Bank; Sam Muller, Founder and former CEO of HiiL; Udo Jude Ilo, CEO of HiiL; and many more.

This conference is ideal for leaders, policymakers, funders, and practitioners who are committed to advancing people-centred justice.
