NYU Law Forum: State Attorneys General Discuss Relations with the Federal Government

by NYU School of Law

The NYU Law Forum, sponsored by Latham & Watkins, convened a panel discussion featuring state attorneys general to examine the evolving dynamics between state governments and the federal administration. Moderated by Vanita Gupta, the panel included Phil Weiser, Colorado's Attorney General; Jennifer Levy, New York State's First Deputy Attorney General; and Matthew Platkin, New Jersey's Attorney General.

The discussion addressed multiple state lawsuits filed against the federal government, including those opposing funding freezes and attempts to end birthright citizenship. Panelists explored the legal ramifications of diminished federal enforcement of civil rights and environmental laws, and considered areas of potential collaboration between states and the federal government, such as addressing the opioid epidemic and the impact of social media on youth mental health.

The event provided networking opportunities for attendees to engage with prominent legal figures and gain insights into the challenges and responsibilities of state attorneys general. Notable speakers included Vanita Gupta, Phil Weiser, Jennifer Levy, and Matthew Platkin, who shared their experiences and perspectives on state-federal relations.

Law students and legal professionals interested in public service and state-level legal practice would benefit from attending this forum. The event offered a unique opportunity to understand the critical role of state attorneys general in shaping law and policy, and to consider the impact of federal actions on state governance.
