Advanced Seminar on Law and Technology: Mitigating the Judicial Human-AI Fairness Gap
The "Advanced Seminar on Law and Technology: Mitigating the Judicial Human-AI Fairness Gap" is an academic event organized by the Law and Technology Centre at The University of Hong Kong. Scheduled for March 4, 2026, from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm, the seminar will be held in the Academic Conference Room on the 11th floor of the Cheng Yu Tung Tower at The University of Hong Kong. The featured speaker is Yoan Hermstrüwer, Associate Professor of Legal Tech, Law and Economics, and Public Law at the University of Zurich.
The seminar will explore the perceived fairness of algorithmic decision-making in judicial contexts. Professor Hermstrüwer will present findings from two extensive online experiments involving over 7,400 participants, examining whether decisions made by AI systems are viewed as less fair compared to those made by human judges. The research also investigates how varying levels of human involvement in AI-assisted judicial processes can influence perceptions of procedural fairness. Additionally, the study considers the impact of participant ethnicity on fairness perceptions within hybrid court settings.
Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with cutting-edge research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and judicial processes. The event is particularly relevant for legal professionals, scholars, and students interested in AI ethics, judicial fairness, and the integration of technology into legal systems. A paper will be circulated in advance, and participants are expected to have read it prior to the seminar. The Law Society of Hong Kong is applying for a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) point for this event.
