The ALAI Congress 2026, organized by the Vereniging voor Auteursrecht (VvA), the Dutch national group of the Association Littéraire et Artistique Internationale (ALAI), will convene from June 17 to 19, 2026, at The Hague Marriott Hotel in the Netherlands. This annual event gathers scholars, practitioners, and policymakers to discuss and advance international copyright law.
The central theme for 2026 is "Copyright and Free Expression in the Age of Algorithms." The program will explore the balance between protecting creators' rights and ensuring freedom of expression in a digital landscape dominated by algorithms, AI systems, and digital platforms. Sessions will address topics such as legal mechanisms to safeguard freedom of expression, the impact of AI on artistic creativity, and the future of copyright in the context of generative AI.
In addition to the main sessions, the congress offers a Next Generation Event on June 17, designed for early-career copyright scholars and practitioners. This half-day side event provides a platform for emerging professionals to engage in discussions on cutting-edge topics at the intersection of copyright and freedom of expression, fostering networking and collaborative opportunities.
Attendees can also participate in social events, including a welcome reception at the Kunstmuseum and a conference dinner at De Nieuwe Kerk, offering opportunities to connect with peers in historic and culturally significant venues. The congress is ideal for legal professionals, academics, and policymakers interested in the evolving challenges of copyright law in the digital era.
