by Lamar University

The Lamar University Distinguished Lecture Series is an annual event that brings prominent scholars and thought leaders to Beaumont, Texas, to engage with the university community and the public. In April 2026, the series featured Dr. Lawrence Lessig, a renowned legal scholar and activist, who delivered a lecture on April 14 at 7 p.m. in the University Theatre.

Dr. Lessig, the Roy L. Furman Professor of Law and Leadership at Harvard Law School, is widely recognized for his work on constitutional law, digital rights, and democratic reform. His scholarship has significantly influenced national conversations on the legal implications of technology and the factors affecting public trust in democratic institutions. Prior to the lecture, Dr. Lessig participated in a student Q&A session at 2 p.m. in the Setzer Student Center, Neches Room 120, offering students an opportunity to engage directly with his work and ask questions about law, technology, and democracy.

The lecture was free and open to the public, reflecting Lamar University's commitment to providing access to thought-provoking discussions on critical issues at the intersection of law, technology, and society.

This event was particularly beneficial for students, legal professionals, and community members interested in understanding the evolving relationship between law and technology, and the challenges and opportunities it presents for democratic governance.
