Patent Prosecution Boot Camp

by American Intellectual Property Law Association

The Patent Prosecution Boot Camp (PPBC) is an intensive, three-day seminar designed to equip participants with essential skills in U.S. and international patent preparation and prosecution. Organized by the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), this program is tailored for new or junior lawyers, patent agents, technical advisors, IP specialists, and international practitioners seeking to enhance their proficiency in patent law.

The curriculum is structured to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Day one focuses on the preparation of patent applications, covering topics such as initial inventor interviews, inventorship and filing formalities, patent searches, and the proper use of AI in patent drafting. Afternoon workshops are organized by technology backgrounds—Mechanical, Electrical/Software, and Biotech/Chemical—to offer hands-on experience in claims drafting. Day two delves into the prosecution of patent applications, addressing responses to various rejections, restriction requirements, continuations, and examiner interviews. Interactive workshops provide practical training in responding to office actions across different technological fields. The program concludes on day three with advanced topics, including petitions, appeals, post-grant proceedings, international practice, ethics, and the duty of candor.

Participants will have opportunities to network with peers and experts in the field. A networking reception at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is scheduled for Thursday evening, offering a platform to connect with fellow attendees and professionals. The event is held at the AIPLA Headquarters in Arlington, VA, providing a conducive environment for learning and collaboration.

This boot camp is ideal for individuals aiming to build a solid foundation in patent prosecution. Whether you're new to the field or looking to refresh your skills, the program offers valuable insights and practical tools to navigate the complexities of patent law effectively.
